MABFAN NEWSLETTER # 33 (July 2002)

Michael A. Burstein's "Friends Across the Net" Newsletter

Hello everyone. It's been about three months since I last sent out a newsletter, and I did have news of a Hugo nomination to report. But the past few months have been extremely busy ones for me, for a variety of reasons, and so I haven't had a chance to put together a newsletter until now. But I hope you'll find the news worth the wait.

AWARD NEWS

First of all, as I mentioned above, I am pleased to be able to announce another Hugo nomination, my fifth. This one is for "Spaceships," a story of mine that appeared in Analog in June 2001. The story is currently available on the Analog webpage at http://www.analogsf.com, and if you're a member of ConJose, or even if you're not, you might want to check it out. As usual, the Hugo winners will be announced over Labor Day weekend.

My thanks to any and all of you who nominated my work.

And secondly, "Kaddish for the Last Survivor" lost the Nebula Award. Had it won, I would have emailed a newsletter a lot sooner.

OUT RIGHT NOW

Cumberland House, a small press in Tennessee, has just published the anthology IN THE SHADOW OF THE WALL: VIETNAM STORIES THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN edited by Byron R. Tetrick. This book contains my collaboration with Mike Resnick, "Reflections in Black Granite." Mike and I are both really proud of this story. If your local bookstore isn't stocking the book, you can always ask them to special order it; or, of course, you can always find the book on line at places like Amazon.

UPCOMING APPEARANCES

This month, I'll be one of the program participants at Readercon 14, which will be held over the weekend of July 12-14, 2002, in Burlington Massachusetts. For more information, check out their webpage at http://www.readercon.org.

And, for those of you who can't travel, I'll be doing a "Meet Our Hugo Nominees" on-line chat sponsored by ANALOG and ASIMOV'S on August 13 at 9 PM Eastern Time. Other guests will be Mike Resnick, Allen M. Steele, Charles Stross, and Shane Tourtellotte. For more information, go to http://www.scifi.com/chat.
